Southern Spain, Andalucia

The region situated to the southern of Spain, known as Andalusia, is the second biggest in the country and where there is a higher amount of inhabitants amongst the 17 autonomous regions that form Spain. The 87.000 km2 that Andalusia covers are divided into 8 provinces: Malaga, Seville, Granada, Cadiz, Cordoba, Almeria, Huelva and Jaen, where Malaga is the tourist capital and most popular destination for the tourists while Seville is considered the official capital of Andalusia.

Andalusia, known in the past as al-Andalus, was dominated by the Arabs for 800 years, which has left a past and a rich history in nuances. A kingdom that in the past was dominated by citadels and fortresses, stories of the thousand and one nights that were conquered around the year 1496 by the Christian armies, but has always been culturally differentiated from the rest of the peninsula and that today offers the visitor an unforgettable experience.

Seville is a popular city, it has important monuments, traces of an Arab past with constructions like the ‘Giralda’ and the ‘Torre del Oro’, a city that grew for centuries helped by its location next to the river Guadalquivir that, after originating in the Cazorla mountains, crosses other provinces on its way until its mouth: Cordoba, Seville and the province of Huelva, ending in the Natural Park of Doñana, a place of impressive natural beauty that will amaze every single visitor.

Costa del Sol

The south of Spain has one of the main tourist attractions, the Mediterranean and its large beaches, with Marbella, Torremolinos, Nerja or Estepona as the main destinations if we exclusively count the province of Malaga, which also hosts the Gibralfaro castle and the square of La Merced, where the house of birth of the famous painter Pablo Picasso is situated.

Another reason for which the south of Spain is well-known is the golf, the Costa del Sol (also known as the Costa del Golf) is a destination known by many golfers who choose this place as their destination to practice their favourite sport.

Ultimately, the Costa del Sol is completely adapted to a tourism aimed at the sun and sea, which of course one can also enjoy the monuments or the visits to the different inland villages present in the province, slowly evolved over the centuries and with an Arab past that can still be witnessed in the layout of its narrow and meandering streets.

In the occidental area is the Coast of Almeria, where there are such important destinations like Mojacar or Roquetas del Mar, as well as the Cabo de Gata Natural Park.

The Coast of Granada, also known as the Tropical Coast, equally has places like Motril and Almuñecar, which together with its proximity to Sierra Nevada make it a desired destinations by thousands of visitors each year ready to enjoy its beaches in summer, as well as the snow in winter, without forgetting of course the famous Alhambra, an Arab monument of great beauty and with a history that has managed to survive over the centuries with all its magic, declared a World Heritage Place in 1984.

Costa de la Luz

The area corresponds to the Atlantic coast of Cádiz and Huelva, it is known as ‘Costa de la Luz’  with over 300 kilometres of high quality beaches.
